Hypothyroidism

Can I have Low TSH and still be Hypothyroid? Yes!

This is such an important topic I am going to post about it again.  There are many folks like me whose lab work shows low TSH levels.  Doctors who treat only according to TSH will say that means we are fine and normal, but this may not be the case. Certainly for me it was not.

According to Barry Durrant Peatfield a normal or low TSH may still occur with a low thyroid. As a result of the TSH test (which is relatively new in the last 40 years), thousands are denied treatment.

If you have low TSH but all the Hypothyroid Symptoms, find a good doctor who looks beyond TSH.  According to many experts and patients, the more accurate way to assess hypothyroid is through symptoms and the Free T3 lab test. So call the doctor’s office and ask them if they treat by these standards and you will save yourself time, money, and frustration.

I was pregnant with my first child and my TSH was 1,7 (0,3-4,2) and my free T4 was 5,5 (12-22). The first doctor was just staring at the TSH and thought everything was fine but luckily enough a another doctor asked me how I was feeling and when I said I was barely able to keep my eyes open she looked at my records and notised how low the free T4 was! I got medication but she toi was afraid that I might become hyperthyroid… This happened 11,5 years ago and 8 years ago I my TPOAb was tested and it was still 277. So I'm a Hashimo patient with hypothyroidism.

What is the benefit of using iodine?

According to healthyonline.com, the thyroid (located at the frontal base of the neck) is the key gland that furnishes energy to every cell in the body. Its function is dependent on a balance of nutrients and trace minerals. These include zinc, copper, manganese and especially iodine.

Iodine is an essential nutrient needed for the production of the body's thyroid hormones and is therefore required for normal thyroid function. Thyroid hormones are responsible for our basal metabolic rate (BMR), which reflects the body's use of energy. In addition, they are beneficial for:

    • Normal growth and development
    • Protein synthesis
    • Cholesterol synthesis
    • Carbohydrate absorption
    • Energy metabolism
    • Nerve and bone formation
    • Reproduction
    • The condition of the skin, hair, nails and teeth
    • Speech and mental state
    • Cold hands and feet
